A millimetre of rain is a depth spread across a surface, which also makes it easy to translate rainfall into litres of water.

Rainfall is recorded as depth

When the Bureau of Meteorology reports 10 millimetres of rain, it does not mean every falling drop had that size. It means the collected water would form a layer 10 millimetres deep if it were spread evenly across a flat, impermeable surface. Depth works across gauges and catchments because it describes the water relative to area. A small gauge and a large roof can experience the same rainfall depth while collecting very different volumes.

The litre connection

One millimetre falling on one square metre equals one litre of water. The arithmetic is direct: a depth of one thousandth of a metre multiplied by one square metre is one thousandth of a cubic metre, and that is one litre. A 100 square metre roof receiving 10 millimetres therefore has a theoretical 1,000 litres landing on it. Real collection is lower because of losses, overflow, debris and the design of gutters and tanks.

What a rain gauge does

A standard rain gauge funnels precipitation into a measured container. Its design gives observers a consistent way to convert the collected amount into depth. The site matters. Buildings, trees, wind and splashing can make a gauge unrepresentative, so official stations follow exposure and observation practices. The number is a measurement at that location, not a guarantee that every paddock or street nearby received exactly the same total.

Daily totals need a clock

A daily rainfall total belongs to a defined observation period. It is not always identical to rain since midnight on a phone app. The Bureau's climate records use specified observation times and quality controls. Automated stations and forecast products can use other time windows. Comparing two totals without checking the period can create a false discrepancy, especially when a storm crosses the boundary between one observation day and the next.

Why intensity is different

A total says how much water accumulated, while intensity says how quickly it fell. Twenty millimetres spread across a day can have a different drainage and flood effect from 20 millimetres in 15 minutes. Soil moisture, slope, urban surfaces, tides and catchment conditions also matter. Rainfall depth is essential evidence, but it cannot by itself describe impact. Warnings and flood forecasts combine observations with the wider physical situation.

Reading the number honestly

Check the station, period and whether the figure is observed, estimated or forecast. Treat local reports as local unless a mapped analysis supports a broader claim. For water collection, convert millimetres to litres using the actual catchment area and allow for losses. The simple unit is powerful precisely because it stays modest: it tells us the measured depth of water, while leaving impact and distribution to additional evidence.
