This is the rare internet fact that survives a trip back to the measurements. What changes is not the verdict. It is our understanding of what the verdict means.
Start with the Australian span
Geoscience Australia describes the country as almost 4,000 kilometres wide from east to west. Its list of continental extremities identifies Cape Byron in New South Wales as the eastern point and Steep Point in Western Australia as the western point.
The agency uses approximate language because a continent is not a tidy rectangle. Its coastline is irregular, its extreme points sit at different latitudes, and the word width compresses a geographic span into a familiar mental picture.
Then measure the Moon
NASA gives the Moon a radius of about 1,740 kilometres. A diameter is twice a radius, so the corresponding diameter is about 3,480 kilometres.
On those official rounded measurements, Australia's east to west span is roughly 15 per cent greater than the Moon's diameter.
The claim is about one span across Australia and one line through the Moon. It is not a claim about total size.
Where the comparison can mislead
A continental span and the diameter of a sphere are different kinds of measurement. One follows the scale of an irregular landmass on Earth. The other passes through the centre of a nearly spherical body. The comparison is useful for intuition, but it does not tell us that Australia is bigger than the Moon in every sense.
It also says nothing about surface area or volume. The Moon wraps around in every direction. Australia occupies one area on Earth's surface. A reader who hears wider and silently substitutes larger has changed the claim.
The conclusion
True with context. If wider means Australia's approximate east to west span compared with the Moon's diameter, the country is wider by roughly 500 kilometres. Keep the words approximate, east to west and diameter attached to the fact, and it remains both surprising and accurate.
